Redbarn Pet Products Expands Dog Chew Recall – Salmonella Risk

Redbarn Pet Products, LLC of Long Beach, CA, has expanded its February 9, 2018 voluntarily recall to include all lots of product manufactured with raw material from a single supplier because it may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recall is limited to products distributed March 2017 through February 2018. The supplier’s raw materials were used to produce the Redbarn, Chewy Louie, Dentley’s and Good Lovin’ brand products listed below, with best-buy dates ending in BC. In total, 24 SKUs are affected.  To date, no pet or human illnesses have been reported.

In early February, Redbarn initiated a recall of a single lot of product after being notified that a sample collected at retail by the Colorado Department of Agriculture tested positive for Salmonella. Redbarn is expanding this recall to include all products manufactured from the raw material supplier of the first recalled product. Redbarn came to this decision after being notified that the FDA tested a different lot of raw material from this supplier at Redbarn and it tested positive for Salmonella.

According to a statement from the company, family-owned Redbarn takes the safety of its products, pets, and customers as a number one concern. Redbarn employs an extensive Quality Assurance team that run over 400 safety tests on their products every week. All products are tested multiple times, for bacteria like Salmonella, coliforms, and enteros. A product is declared safe to ship only after it tests negatively for these bacteria and other pathogens. As company President Jeff Sutherland explained, “In expanding this voluntary recall, in conjunction with the FDA, we are standing by our core values of quality and integrity. After further investigation, we have decided to recall all products that were produced from raw materials sourced from this supplier to ensure we fully captured all potentially affected product and keep our customers safe.”

The products included in the expanded recall were distributed nationwide in pet specialty and grocery retail stores. Affected products are listed below:
